Full, partial, and just the hard bits

Packing services, from the whole house down to just the kitchen.

Packing always takes longer than anyone plans for. Handing it over is the difference between a calm last night and a very long one.

What you get

How much of it you hand over is up to you.

Most people choose the middle option, and for many, it is the right balance.

Full pack

Everything, room by room, in the day or two before the move. You do nothing except decide what is not coming.

Partial pack

The kitchen, the glassware, the artwork and anything else you would rather not spend three evenings on. The most common choice.

Materials only

Cartons, paper, tape and covers delivered to you, if you would rather pack yourself but not source it all.

Unpacking

Cartons emptied and taken away at the other end, so you are not living among cardboard for a fortnight.

A stack of cartons strapped to a two-wheeler trolley, tipped back at a driveway crossover.

What changes the price

How packing is priced.

Labour plus materials. Not a flat fee. A flat fee for packing is a fee that has not looked at your house.

  • Packers and hoursTwo packers get through a house far faster than the people who live in it, mostly because they are not stopping every carton to decide what to keep.
  • How much there isThe kitchen often takes longer than two bedrooms put together, regardless of the size of the house. The garage is the other one people underestimate.
  • MaterialsCartons, paper, bubble wrap, tape and speciality cartons for glassware and wardrobes.
  • Fragile and awkward itemsArtwork, mirrors, glass shelving and anything with an odd shape takes longer and needs particular materials.

The questions that set the price

This is the part everyone else skips.

Most forms want a name and a postcode and leave the real questions for a call you are still waiting on. Answer them here instead. It takes a few minutes, and it is the difference between a quote and a guess.

This form is not loading.

It needs JavaScript, and something is stopping it. Rather than have you answer seven questions that would go nowhere, here are the two routes that work without it.

Step 1 of 7
What kind of move is it?

These two types of moves are priced differently. Local is charged by the hour, interstate by the cubic metres your things take up on the truck.

Where are you moving?

The suburb is enough. The postcode and the state fill themselves in.

Moving from

Moving to

Local work is charged by the hour, and the rate follows the city the truck and crew come out of. Rates in Melbourne and Sydney are higher than in Brisbane.

How big is the place you’re leaving?

Property type matters as much as the number of bedrooms. A three-bedroom house is usually around 30 cubic metres, a three-bedroom unit closer to 24.

Bedrooms

How full is it?

Boxes alone are usually five to ten cubic metres, the part almost everyone underestimates.

Anything else to clear? Select all that apply.

How easy is access at each end?

A third floor with a lift is a different job from a third floor without one, and the lift usually has to be booked with the body corporate days ahead. We go through parking and the walk from the truck when we ring.

When are you moving?

Weekends cost more, and so does the stretch from the week before Christmas to mid-January, when most leases end. If your dates can shift by a few days, your move may fit on a truck already running your route.

How fixed is that date?

Anything else we should plan for?

Packing can be as much or as little as you want. A piano, a pool table or a safe is a job of its own: different gear, more hands, and its own price on top.

Special items

Where should we send your quote?

That is the hard part done. Everything you have answered goes to the person who prices the move, and they will have read all of it before they ring. The quote comes back in writing, split into lines. It is based on your answers, so it can change if the details on the day are materially different.

Thanks, we’ve got that.

Your answers are with the person who prices the move. The quote comes back in writing, split into lines, and they will ring to go through it. Your reference is .

Not ready for the full questionnaire

Leave three details.

The person who calls you back is the person who prices your move, not a call centre passing you from one person to another. Submitting this form does not book your move.

Where this usually comes up

Where packing help earns its cost.

  • Working full timeThe evenings before a move are the ones you least want to spend wrapping plates.
  • A house full of fragile thingsGlassware, ceramics and artwork are the slowest things in a house to pack well, and the first things the packers start on.
  • A short settlementWhen there simply are not enough evenings between now and the day.
  • InterstateInterstate loads are packed tighter and stacked to travel, which is a different job from packing for a drive across town.
  • Moving with young childrenPacking around a toddler takes roughly three times as long, as anyone who has tried it will confirm.

How it works

Four steps, and you are only committed at the third.

  1. 01

    You answer

What you have, where it is going, and every awkward thing about getting it out of one place and into the other. The awkward things are the ones that cost money.

  2. 02

    We price it

Off our own rate card, split into lines, in writing. Then a short call about what a form still cannot see: the carry to the truck, the turn at the top of the stairs, whether the lift has to be booked with the body corporate.

  3. 03

    Book your date

A deposit over the phone confirms your booking and allows us to arrange your move. You will know the truck size, the crew size and when they are due.

  4. 04

    Moving day

The independent removal provider booked for your date does the move. Beds go back together first, and cartons go into the room they were labelled for.

Straight answers

The questions people ask before they ring.

How long does packing a house take?

Two packers will usually get through a two-bedroom home in most of a day. Larger homes take longer, and the kitchen is almost always the slowest room regardless of the size of the house.

Are boxes supplied?

Yes. Cartons, paper, tape and speciality cartons for glassware and hanging clothes are all included when packing is booked, and can be supplied on their own if you would rather do it yourself.

Should I pack anything myself?

Documents, jewellery, medication, keys and anything irreplaceable should travel with you rather than on the truck. Beyond that, it is entirely your call.

Can unpacking be included?

Yes. Cartons are emptied, contents placed, and the empties taken away, which is the part people forget to plan for.

How many boxes will I need?

More than you think. Boxes alone typically come to five to ten cubic metres for a household, which is the single most underestimated part of any move.

The driveway is the worst place to discuss money.

Answer the questions once. It comes back in writing, split into lines, and the person who priced it rings to go through it with you.
