Removals across Australia

Every question now. Not on the day.

Quotes blow out because nobody asked the right questions. Not how many bedrooms. The stairs, the carry from your door to the kerb, the lift that has to be booked days ahead, and the cartons, which everybody underestimates. We ask the lot, then price it in writing.

The questions that set the price

This is the part everyone else skips.

Most quote forms want a name, a phone number and a postcode. Then somebody rings and asks the real questions, or does not, and finds out about the staircase while standing at the bottom of it. Answer them here instead. It takes a few minutes and it is the difference between a quote and a guess.

It needs JavaScript, and something is stopping it. Rather than have you answer seven questions that would go nowhere, here are the two routes that work without it.

Step 1 of 7
What kind of move is it?

These two types of moves are priced differently. Local is charged by the hour, interstate by the cubic metres your things take up on the truck.

Where are you moving?

The suburb is enough. The postcode and the state fill themselves in.

Moving from

Moving to

Local work is charged by the hour, and the rate follows the city the truck and crew come out of. Rates in Melbourne and Sydney are higher than in Brisbane.

How big is the place you’re leaving?

Property type matters as much as the number of bedrooms. A three-bedroom house is usually around 30 cubic metres, a three-bedroom unit closer to 24.

Bedrooms

How full is it?

Boxes alone are usually five to ten cubic metres, the part almost everyone underestimates.

Anything else to clear? Select all that apply.

How easy is access at each end?

A third floor with a lift is a different job from a third floor without one, and the lift usually has to be booked with the body corporate days ahead. We go through parking and the walk from the truck when we ring.

When are you moving?

Weekends cost more, and so does the stretch from the week before Christmas to mid-January, when most leases end. If your dates can shift by a few days, your move may fit on a truck already running your route.

How fixed is that date?

Anything else we should plan for?

Packing can be as much or as little as you want. A piano, a pool table or a safe is a job of its own: different gear, more hands, and its own price on top.

Special items

Where should we send your quote?

That is the hard part done. Everything you have answered goes to the person who prices the move, and they will have read all of it before they ring. The quote comes back in writing, split into lines. It is based on your answers, so it can change if the details on the day are materially different.

Thanks, we’ve got that.

How removals are actually priced

There is no single price for moving. There are two ways we price a move.

Most quote forms hide this. Knowing which one applies to you is the difference between a useful number and a guess.

Local moves

Sold by time.

You pay for crew hours and a truck, with a minimum booking. What drives the cost is not distance. It is how long the job takes. Stairs, lifts, parking and how far the crew has to carry things matter far more than the kilometres between addresses.

Interstate moves

Sold by space.

You pay for the cubic metres your belongings take up on a truck, at a rate set by the route. Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane are the busiest corridors and price accordingly. Perth and Darwin cost considerably more, because far fewer trucks run them.

And flexible dates cost less. If your dates can shift by a few days, your things travel on a truck already running that route rather than one booked for you alone. That is a backload, and it is the largest saving on an interstate move. The trade-off is a delivery window of a few days instead of a fixed date, and your quote prices it both ways so you can see what the flexibility is worth.

How it works

Four steps, and you are only committed at the third.

  1. 01

    You answer

What you have, where it is going, and every awkward thing about getting it out of one place and into the other. The awkward things are the ones that cost money.

  2. 02

    We price it

Off our own rate card, split into lines, in writing. Then a short call about the one or two things a form still cannot see, while you can still walk away. The price is based on what you tell us, so it can change if the details on the day are materially different.

  3. 03

    Book your date

A deposit confirms your booking and allows us to arrange your move. You get a start time, a truck size and an honest idea of how long the day runs, which is the part most people are never told.

  4. 04

    Moving day

Beds come apart early and go back together first, because the day has to end with somewhere to sleep.

Why quotes change on the day

What actually moves the price.

Five things decide what a move costs, and four of them have nothing to do with distance. Every quote form should ask about all five. Almost none of them do, which is why the number so often changes once the truck is at the kerb.

  • How much there isMeasured in cubic metres. A three-bedroom house is usually around 30, and the boxes alone are five to ten of that.
  • Stairs and liftsA third-floor walk-up and a third floor with a lift are different jobs. And the lift has to be booked with the body corporate, usually days ahead.
  • Where the truck can parkThe most common reason a price moves on the day is a long carry nobody mentioned. Every extra metre of it is time, and time is what a local move is sold in.
  • Your datesWeekends cost more. So does the run from late December into January, when most leases end and everyone moves at once.
  • Packing and special itemsPianos, safes and slate pool tables are jobs of their own. The slate comes off a table before it goes anywhere, and a piano wants a proper trolley and a straight run at the truck.

Interstate

Some routes are simply busier than others.

Trucks run between Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane every day, which is why rates on this route are generally more competitive. The long hauls west and north are a different economy, and we would rather tell you that now than at the end of a phone call.

Not ready for the full questionnaire

Leave three details.

The person who calls you back is the person who prices your move, not a call centre passing you from one person to another. Submitting this form does not book your move.

Before the day

Tell us before the day, not on it.

If the lift needs booking, the keys come late from the agent or the new place is not ready until the afternoon, ring us before the day. The person who quoted your job is the one who answers the phone.

The move itself is carried out by an independent removal provider. What we agree with you goes to them with the booking, so the crew know it before they arrive.

Straight answers

The questions people ask before they ring.

Why is there no price on the website?

Because a number a form works out on its own is a guess, and a guess is what turns into an argument in the driveway. Your answers go to somebody who prices removals for a living. They work out the actual job against our own rate card and send it to you in writing, split into lines, then ring to go through it.

Is the quote the price I will pay?

It is what the job comes to on everything you have told us, split into lines so nothing is buried. We confirm it on a short call, because there are things about a property no questionnaire can see. Tell us the truth about the access and there is nothing left to find on the day.

How far ahead should I book?

For an ordinary week, a couple of weeks is comfortable. The end of the month and Saturdays go first, because that is when leases turn over. For late December and the first half of January, considerably longer: that is the busiest stretch of the year by a long way, and the dearest.

Can I book a weekend move?

Yes. Weekends carry a higher rate across the industry because demand is concentrated there, and your quote shows it as its own line rather than hiding it until the end.

What if my dates are not fixed yet?

That is worth money to you. Flexible dates let your belongings travel on a truck already running your route, which on an interstate move is a substantial saving. Tell us your dates can move and we will price it both ways, so you can see exactly what the flexibility is worth before you decide.

Do you cover my area?

We arrange moves right across Australia, including every mainland interstate corridor and Tasmania. Tell us where you are going and we will tell you honestly what is realistic for those dates.

The driveway is the worst place to discuss money.
